Overview

Super Sensa has been formulated to help with the following:

  • To provide a moisturizer option for even the most sensitive acne-prone, Rosacea, or Eczema-prone skin that minimizes the risk of breakouts & irritation.
  • To help heal irritation, optimize wound healing and repair the skin barrier.
  • To provide long-term lasting hydration in a gel-cream format that's friendly for all skin types.
  • To help the skin boost its defenses and barrier against external aggressors
  • To support the skin microbiome with a 6% blend of pre and postbiotics that help harness the skin’s ability to heal and defend itself from irritation and stress

Application Guide

To get started, I always recommend patch testing any new skincare product for at least 10 days to see if any new irritation, breakouts, or allergic reactions occur. This is an annoying but necessary step, especially if you are dealing with a compromised skin barrier. I recommend doing this with all new products you introduce into your routine.

When you’re completing a patch test, avoid introducing any other new products or supplements to your routine until you finish the process!

Everyone is unique and anyone can be allergic to pretty much anything. While we meticulously formulate our products to minimize the risk of allergies and irritation, there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic product and there never will be.

Climate Guide

How much natural oil your skin produces and the climate you live in will have a major impact on your skincare routine and whether or not you need to use an occlusive to lock in your skin's moisture or extra humectants to combat dry air. This may change throughout the year depending on where you live.

I formulated Super Sensa with a lightweight volatile silicone (Cyclopentasiloxane) that helps to decrease trans-epidermal water loss, decrease stickiness, and prevent pilling.

Below, you’ll find specific tips to maximize your results based on your skin and climate.

Dry skin in a dry climate

If you have drier acne-prone skin and live in a dry climate, your biggest challenge will be preventing dehydration, aka trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL). The caveat is, that a lot of great ingredients that help prevent TEWL, are heavier in nature and can sometimes lead to clogged pores and breakouts. This can lead to you having to make a choice between having clear and dehydrated skin or hydrated skin with breakouts! Trust me, as a Canadian living in perpetual winter, I have been there!

The gold standard for preventing TEWL (Source) and skin dehydration is petrolatum, also known as petroleum jelly aka 'Vaseline'. If you are struggling with excessive dryness but are unable to use richer tetures I recommend applying a VERY thin layer of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or Eucerin’s Aquaphor Healing Ointment over top of Super Sensa. The best thing about petroleum jelly is it does not clog pores when used correctly. The worst thing about it is it can be a bit greasy.

TIP: Once you’ve applied a layer of Super Sensa on your face apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to your driest areas immediately after. To apply petroleum jelly without making your skin too greasy or shiny take a pea-sized amount of petroleum jelly and place it into your clean palm, vigorously rub your palms together for 10 seconds and then press your hands gently onto your face. This is essential as applying a thick layer can eventually lead to an increase in breakouts because it creates an ideal environment for acne and fungal acne development.

Oilier skin in a dry climate

If your skin is acne-prone and more on the oily side, you’ll still want to minimize trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), without making your skin feel more oily. You may find Super Sensa on its own is enough, but if you are still struggling with dehydration, you may be able to use petroleum jelly or Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment at nighttime, but during the day you may find these products leave your skin feeling too greasy.

For daytime use, the next best non-pore-clogging alternative to petroleum jelly is Dimethicone. Petroleum jelly reduces TEWL by approximately 98 percent and Dimethicone can reduce TEWL by about 20-30% (Source). If you’re looking for a Dimethicone-based product, we recommend a makeup primer (yes they can totally be used as occlusives too) as a lot of the skin-protectant creams out there contain pore-clogging ingredients. The Ordinary’s High-Spreadability Fluid Primer is a great affordable option (but the packaging SUCKS). I also love NYX’s Pore Filler Blurring Primer.

Dry or oilier skin in a more humid climate

If you live in a more humid climate, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) will be less of a concern for your skin. You may be able to skip using an occlusive altogether, particularly if your skin is more oily. If your skin is on the drier side, you may find layering on your sunscreen provides enough moisture. Bottom line, don’t be afraid to experiment with layering!

Multitasking Guide

We formulated Super Sensa so it can be used in a variety of ways. The formula has been intentionally designed to be compatible with a wide variety of other product textures.

Super Sensa can be used several ways

  • On its own
  • Underneath your favorite occlusive (I love plain petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or Eucerin’s Aquaphor Healing Ointment)
  • Mixed in with your retinoid treatment to decrease dryness and irritation
  • Add a few pumps to a heavier moisturizer for an extra hydrating, soothing boost
  • Added to foundation for a sheer, dewy finish; it works with both water-based and silicone-based foundations
